Zafu
A Zafu is a traditional cushion used in Zen meditation (zazen) and other forms of seated meditation. It's designed to provide comfort and proper posture, helping the meditator maintain a stable and upright seated position for extended periods.
What is a Zafu?
Shape: Typically round and firm, about 12–14 inches in diameter and 5–8 inches high.
Filling: Traditionally stuffed with kapok (a fluffy natural fiber) or buckwheat hulls, which conform to the body while providing firm support.
Cover: Often made of durable cotton or hemp fabric, and sometimes has a handle for easy carrying.
Purpose and Benefits
- Posture Support: Elevates the hips above the knees, helping the spine stay in natural alignment.
- Comfort During Meditation: Reduces strain on knees, ankles, and back during long sitting sessions.
- Stability: Provides a solid base, preventing shifting or fidgeting that can interrupt meditation.
Common Positions with a Zafu
- Full Lotus (Padmasana): Both feet rest on opposite thighs.
- Half Lotus: One foot on the opposite thigh, the other on the floor.
- Burmese Position: Legs crossed loosely with both knees on the floor.
- Seiza (with a Zafu turned vertically): Kneeling with the zafu between the ankles as a support for the seat.
Zafu vs. Zabuton
Zafu: The round cushion supporting the hips.
Zabuton: A flat, square mat placed underneath the zafu to cushion the knees and ankles.
Often used together for enhanced comfort.
️ Where to Buy
Amazon, Etsy, or meditation supply stores carry a variety of zafus.
Look for quality fabric, double-stitched seams, and options with removable covers for easy washing.
Care Tips
- Buckwheat-filled zafus: Can be adjusted by adding/removing hulls.
- Kapok-filled zafus: Lighter but firmer; fluff occasionally to maintain shape.
- Washable covers: Prefer zafus with removable covers for hygiene.
