Zabuton
What is a Zabuton?
A zabuton is a traditional Japanese floor cushion used for sitting, most commonly during zazen (seated meditation), tea ceremonies, or general floor seating in Japanese homes.
Design and Features
- Shape and Size: Usually rectangular, around 20–30 inches on each side, and 2–4 inches thick.
- Filling: Often filled with cotton batting, polyester fiber, or foam for comfort and durability.
- Cover: Made from durable fabric such as cotton or linen; sometimes comes with a removable and washable cover.
Purpose and Benefits
- Knee and Ankle Cushioning: Used underneath a zafu or directly on the floor to protect knees and ankles during meditation.
- Improved Comfort: Helps distribute body weight evenly, reducing pressure on the legs and enhancing comfort during long sitting sessions.
- Traditional Use: In Japanese culture, zabutons are also used for meals, tea ceremonies, and sitting on tatami floors.
Zabuton and Zafu Combo
The zabuton is often paired with a zafu (round meditation cushion). The zafu supports the hips, while the zabuton cushions the knees and legs that touch the floor, creating a complete and ergonomic meditation setup.
️ Where to Buy
You can find zabutons on websites like Amazon, Etsy, or through specialized yoga and meditation supply stores. Many sellers offer sets with both a zafu and a zabuton.
Care Tips
- Removable Covers: Choose zabutons with washable covers for easy cleaning.
- Fluff Regularly: If filled with cotton, fluff the zabuton occasionally to maintain its shape and support.
- Use on Clean Floors: Keep your zabuton in clean, dry areas to avoid dust accumulation and extend its life.
